چکیده

Functional imaging (PET and fMRI) has made great advances in our understanding of the neural basis of auditory processing and speech perception. Here we review perceptual and sensory processing aspects of speech and hearing, as revealed by functional imaging studies. A comparison is made of the peaks of activity in the left hemisphere across the different studies discussed, with implications for patterns of hierarchical processing in the auditory system addressed. This is related to the functional anatomy of the auditory cortex as determined from non-human primate

The neural basis of speech perception - a view from functional imaging

Functional imaging techniques, such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET), functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), have enabled neuroscientists to elaborate how the human brain solves the formidable problem of decoding the speech signal. In this paper I will outline the properties of primate auditory cortex, and use this as an anatomical framework to address the data from functional imagi...

Different olfactory perception in heroin addicts: an fMRI study

Background: Addiction as a mental disorder has large adverse effects on brain health. It alters brain structure and deteriorates brain functionality. Impairment of brain cognition in drug addiction is illustrated in many previous works; however, olfactory perception in addiction and in particular the neuronal mechanisms of it are rarely studied. Methods: In this experiment, we recruited 20 he...

Functional imaging of the central auditory system using PET.

In the last few decades functional neuroimaging tools have emerged to study the function of the human brain in vivo. These techniques have increased the knowledge of how the brain processes stimuli of different sensory modalities, including auditory processing. Positron emission tomography (PET) has been used for nearly 20 years to study changes in cerebral blood flow associated with auditory s...

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore brain function: cortical representations of language critical areas

Pre-operative determination of the dominant hemisphere for speech and speech associated sensory and motor regions has been of great interest for the neurological surgeons. This dilemma has been of at most importance, but difficult to achieve, requiring either invasive (Wada test) or non-invasive methods (Brain Mapping). In the present study we have employed functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging...

Background & Aim: When inner ear is disturbed, both hearing sensitivity and selective property decrease. Early rehabilitation for proper progression of speech and language appropriate to age is mandatory. Several studies were performed to compare factors that affect the results of cochlear implantations to select the best candidates on the basis of different criteria. This study was underta...
